Calvin

No, this isn't about Calvin & Hobbes, although, that'd be a fun blog....no, this is about John Calvin and his beliefs.

I am super nervous to post this, but I am curious of what you all think.  So, with that being said, please, don't get aggressive with your thoughts towards me or anyone else who might comment.  This, at least for the past 10 years or so, has been a topic of interest for me.  I was talking with someone a few nights ago and they were struggling with which way to lean.

So, do you agree with any or all of his 5 points in "TULIP" or not?  Either answer, I request you back it up with scripture, not logic.  Thanks all!

Refresher:
T--Total Depravity (we are all totally sinful)
U--Unconditional Election (God choses the elect)
L--Limited Atonement (Jesus only died for the said elect)
I--Irresistible Grace (When God calls, you cannot resist Him)
P--Perseverance of the Saints (once saved, you will always be saved)

  1. Awesome that you've been thinking about these things! Coming to understand the doctrines of grace has given me great comfort and hope as I have walked through intense physical suffering these last 3 years. Knowing that God is completely sovereign even in salvation helps me trust Him more. I came to understand these truths when I was a senior at Union. This document by John Piper's church really helped me in working through some of my hold-ups. http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/articles/what-we-believe-about-the-five-points-of-calvinism Irresistible grace is kind of the glue to me in understanding election. I like the way Piper explains it TILUP (makes more sense to me).

    Some of my favorite verses:
    T- Rom 3:10-12, Eph 2:3
    U- Rom 9, Eph 1:3-6, Rom 8:28-33
L-Isaiah 53:12, Mark 10:45 (i wrote a paper on this in seminary)Some people say they are 4pt calvinists, but I believe limited atonement is essential for unconditional election
    I-John 6:44, Daniel 4:35, Psalm 115:3, John 10:15
P-Philippians 1:6, Mark 13:13. I think it is much more than once saved always saved. If we are truly believers Christ will sustain us to the end 1 Cor 1:8-9, 2 Peter 1:10 (but we must still work at being holy).

Look forward to talking to you more about this if you are interested! Kari "Noblett"
